[AlertDC] NOAA’s Space Weather Prediction Center has issued a G4 (Severe) Geomagnetic Storm Watch for Monday, January 20, due to increased solar activity.
A geomagnetic storm could cause temporary impacts to critical infrastructure, including power systems, GPS, radio communications, and satellite services.
Residents and visitors may also notice unusual aurora activity, which could be visible farther south than normal.
What you should know:
- Minor disruptions to communications or navigation systems are possible
- No immediate action is required at this time

[AlertDC] The National Weather Service has issued a Winter Weather Advisory for the District of Columbia on Sunday, January 18, 2026, from 4AM to 6PM.
WHAT: Snow expected. Total snow accumulations of 1 to 3 inches.
WHERE: District of Columbia
WHEN: Sunday, January 18, 2026 from 4AM to 6PM.
IMPACTS: Plan on slippery road conditions.
ADDITIONAL DETAILS: Snow, possibly mixed with rain for a few hours, will spread into the area early Sunday morning. There may be some breaks in the snow during the midday hours before additional snow falls in the afternoon. Visibility may drop to one half mile at times in moderate snow. The snow should end during the late afternoon or early evening.
