The Cold Weather Emergency Alert was activated at 4:00 pm today.

The District of Columbia will now activate the Cold Emergency Plan. According to the National Weather Service (NWS), the current temperature is 33 degrees with a wind chill of 21 degrees. Tonight's forecast partly cloudy, with a low around 14. Wind chill values as low as -3.

The District activates the Cold Emergency Plan when the temperature and wind chill drop to 15° F or when the temperature, with wind chill, is 20° F and there is an accompanying meteorological event such as rain or snow. To request shelter transport for DC residents who are homeless and on the street now, contact the Shelter Hotline at (202) 399-7093 or 311.


Many alerts regard violent crime. Do not take action, instead call 911 with the event number if listed.
